Most of my childhood, I didn’t feel apart of the “in” crowd and I definitely wasn’t the “cool” girl. Since then, I’ve formed a pretty tight group of girlfriends that I like to refer to as my Squad. So, if you feel like you haven’t completed your squad goals yet, here are some tips to up your friend game!

  1. Remember It Takes Time – “Haste leads to waste” and when it comes to friends, we definitely need as little “waste” as possible. If you’re like me, you periodically purge your facebook friends list. But most of us don’t do the same when it comes to real friends. Life is too short to have a poisonous person around you all the time that doesn’t lift you up but likes to bring you down with them. Take the time to really decide who you want in your squad because the time invested will be worth it.
  2. Find the Unique Qualities – Sometimes, I think of life as theater. We all have a role to play (sometimes even more than one). Some people are there to make you laugh. Maybe, there is someone you share all your secrets with. Or, another person who gives you the tough love you need (now and again). The point is that everyone in your squad provides something unique that enriches your life, so you should look for those unique qualities in those you interact with.
  3. Common Interests Is Key – I don’t necessarily share the same interests and beliefs with each member of my squad. What we do share are deep core interests/beliefs that transcendent any minor differences we may have. So even if we disagree with which movie to see, it’s not a deal breaker and we all know where we stand at the end of the day. It’s the difference between having a disagreement and being able to hug it out vs. a disagreement which gets physical.
  4. Friend “Up” – I’ve heard the saying that you are the average of your 5 closest friends. That’s why I like to meet people who I respect and have much to learn from. Some people like being the smartest at the table but I like being the least experienced and least knowlegeable because that means I have the opportunity to learn and get better. My squad constantly pushes and challenges me to be better and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
  5. It’s not just YOUR squad – because you have a squad doesn’t mean you’re not a member of someone else’s squad. A squad is basically just a group of people who trust, respect and enjoy spending time with one another. Don’t lose sight of that.
