6 Life Lessons Learned from Sweeney Boo’s Body Positive Graphic Novel

I have been a fan of comic books and graphic novels since I was a kid. When I stumbled across Sweeney Boo’s body positive graphic novel Eat, and Love Yourself on Hoopla, I was BEYOND thrilled. This graphic novel did not disappoint! In fact, I would say this graphic novel was not just fun to read but it was also deeply memorable. Let’s discuss 6 life lessons you will learn too!

#1 Health Always Matters

Currently, I am on a mission to heal my leaky gut. I have never been focused on my health as much as right now. Reading this graphic novel reemphasized the impact health has on all of our lives (regardless of your size or weight).

#2 Other People's Opinion about Your Weight is None of Your Business

My weight has been a topic of conversation with my family since I was 6 years old. This was wrong back then and it still feels very wrong for folks dealing with this behavior now. Whether a person wants to lose weight is a personal decision and a confidential conversation with a medical professional (who isn’t a family member).

#3 Falling in Love with Yourself is the Best Way to Learn how to Love Others

How can you ever truly someone else if you don’t love and accept yourself fully? If you need a reminder of this fact, get the book for a constant reminder!

#4 Always Stand Up for Yourself

It’s easy to forget that we are responsible for teaching others how we want to be treated. If you want people to treat you with respect, you have to show them what that looks like.

#5 Your Tribe Should Uplift You...Not Tear You Down

When your friend makes you feel horrible, it is time to reevaluate that relationship and why that person is in your life. This was another great reminder that was very clear in Eat, and Love Yourself

#6 Happiness Has Nothing to do with Your Weight

Whenever I have been happy, how much I weighed had nothing to do with it. Happiness is a state of mind that is a choice. When you choose to be happy (regardless of your weight), you can do ANYTHING! I am so grateful Sweeney Boo wrote such an entertaining, dynamic, and meaningful graphic novel and I can’t wait for YOU to read Eat, and Love Yourself too!
