Cameo de Boré Phillips holding the “Queen Kathleen”

Cameo de Boré Phillips has designed and sold hundreds of custom-made clutches to women this year alone. She did this while also raising two teenage children with her husband Jerry and mentoring teens and young women in the St. Louis community. If you ask her how she does it all, she’ll tell you that Grace is what moves her: Grace to press forward, Grace to overcome obstacles, and Grace to live an elegant Lady-Like Lifestyle

If you’ve never heard of the Lady-Like Lifestyle movement, then keep reading as Cameo shares with me her inspiration for her clutch designs and what it means to live a Lady-Like Lifestyle. Enjoy!

Natasha: What is the “Lady-Like Lifestyle”?

Cameo: It involves being:

Passionate, driven, poised, grateful, kind, and a leader who makes an impact in the community. It also entails being confident yet modest. Women who are “lady-like” are not perfect but are constantly striving to be better.  It represents the best qualifies we see in the women of our lives: mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers.

Natasha: What is your company’s mission?

Cameo: God has us here to bring back what it means to be Lady-Like. The clutch is one part of the Lady-Like movement that I want to share with the world. We live in a culture that does not value the attributes of being Lady-Like. We need to return to the that lifestyle.

I mentor young women and teens, where I stress that they must reject what is currently idolized in our society. We need to be about something deeper. To think about legacy and the generations to come.

Natasha: How did you get into fashion?

Cameo: I am self-taught but have some experience working with fabrics and textiles. I remember buying a 20’s style sofa on Craigslist and finding ways to give it life again. I like to use materials that normally are not used on clutches.

Natasha: How do you make your clutches?

Cameo: First, I find my inspiration from the materials I see around me, whether it be a beautiful sundress or a curtain that catches my eye. Second, I determine how the new design will work with the existing collection.

Natasha: Why does every woman need a clutch?

Cameo: A clutch is a notch up from the ordinary accessory in my opinion. I purposefully make my clutches over-sized to hold all the essentials. Now, you no longer need to be dressed up to wear a clutch. Most importantly, the clutch is the accessory that most represents the values of the Lady-Like lifestyle.

Natasha: Why should a woman choose your clutches?

Cameo: Every woman can find herself in one of our clutches. We offer wonderful prints, a huge variety, and everyday clutches you will fall in love with. And, the awesome shape of our clutches are complimentary to every ensemble. Plus Size/Curvy women want our clutches because they can finally have a bag that wont get lost in their hand but also makes a statement.

Natasha: What is the story behind each clutch?

Cameo: Each clutch has it’s own personality and is named after a friend or mentee.

Natasha: What should women feel when they buy from Cameo de Boré?

Cameo: They should feel a sense of pride and uniqueness; happy that they are adding a punch to their closet.

Natasha: How did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Cameo: I fell into it. I began designing clutches out of necessity because I couldn’t find what I was looking for. One day, I took my clutch with me to church and everyone loved it. I got an immediate response and folks wanted it. I knew I had something after the 8th person approached me about it. I ship internationally and I work 70 hours per week. 5 years ago, if you would have asked me if I would voluntarily leave a cushy job and start my own company, I would have laughed in your face. If anything, I would have thought I would be doing event planning forever. But, God opened the door and here I am, and St. Louis is a wonderful place to launch a business.

Natasha: How would you describe your personal style?

Cameo: I definitely live the Lady-Like lifestyle. I am all about wearing blazers, beautiful blouses, wide leg trousers, tailored pieces and mixing things up.

Natasha: What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Cameo: You need to fall in love with your product. Always be thinking and dreaming about your business. Your product and/or business needs to be something that you could not live your life without. That is a necessity!
